At school, my piano teacher gave me an old Australian piece by Hooper Brewster-Jones called 'Desolation'. I didn't really understand it at the time, but I could play it well enough to pass an exam.
Back in April this year, I went looking for some other Brewster-Jones pieces to learn, and I found a lot in the Special Collections of the Adelaide University library.
And it turns out, a "Miss Edith Piper" was a student of his! He wrote at least 3 pieces for her.
Also two notes in Series 8.
And it looks like they performed together: “Pastoral Concerto for 2 Pianos - Edith Piper and H. Brewster-Jones”.
I also found some newspaper appearances:
After some family confirmation, not only do several people remember her well, they also remember she worked with Hooper Brewster-Jones! I wonder if my piano teacher ever knew the connection.
So naturally I requested the manuscripts from the library, and transcribed them:
There are some other transcriptions I might get around to, but these are the main ones. And they really, really need a human performance to do them justice.
